Currently we are a group of around 20 parents, two local councillors, community members and various members of the Mackie Academy teaching staff.
Mackie Academy’s Head Teacher, Louise Moir, is present at all meetings along with members of the teaching staff as and when they are required.
We appoint a new chairperson and deputy chairperson as required by the constitution of the Parent Council that can be found here.
I am currently Chair of our Parent Council. This is my second year in the role but I have been involved with the parent council since my first child started at Mackie 8 years ago. Joining a secondary school is a big learning curve for parents as well as children, so being part of the parent council helped me understand more about what goes on in a large school. Staff also work so hard for our children that I felt that lending my support to our school community was the least I could do. This year I'm looking forward to working with staff and parents on issues ranging from recognising achievement to increasing community involvement. During the day, I'm a freelance outdoor learning specialist, never happier than when outside, exploring in nature with a gang of children!
I have been involved with Mackie Academy and the Parent Council for a number of years and this is my second year as Vice Chair. As our children move from primary to secondary school the way we interact with the school community changes and joining the Parent Council was a really helpful way for me to learn more about the school, keep informed about the curriculum and give me a better understanding of the opportunities my children experienced. More importantly I was able to contribute thoughts and provide feedback on how the school supports our children. Over the years I have found Mackie Academy to be really committed to working with the Parent Council to improve the learning experiences for our children. Being a member of the Parent Council has been a positive experience for me and I have been fortunate to meet people that I might never have met but for the Parent Council – that can only be a good thing!
Any parent and / or carer with a child at the school can volunteer themselves to be a member. You can drop us an email at mackiepc@hotmail.co.uk or simply come along to the next meeting and see what we are all about.
