Whole School Religious and Moral Education

Broad General Education

Religious, Moral and Philosophical Studies is a key component of the curriculum for excellence, and is a process where learners can engage in a search for the meaning, value and purpose of life.  Scotland has a rich diversity of beliefs and this is explored in RMPS.  Learners are encouraged to explore their own beliefs and values whilst considering aspects of other religious beliefs and contrasting those with both religious and non-religious views held within Scotland and the UK.  Through undertaking the RMPS courses in S1-2 learners should develop a broader understanding of the views of others and develop respect for and tolerance of those beliefs. Topics covered include an introduction to religion and morality, Christianity,  Sikhism and the Holocaust.    In S2 pupils have the change to visit the Sikh Gurdwara in Glasgow.

In S3 pupils can select RMPS as an option and in the two periods additional to their core studies will undertake the SQA Award in Beliefs and Values putting their ‘values into action’. This course also includes learning about Religion and Relationships and an introduction to Philosophy.

Senior Phase

In S3 and S4 all pupils study RMPS as a core subject.  Learners will undertake the SQA National 4 course and gain an additional N4 qualification should they successfully complete all four units.

Unit 3: Religious and Philosophical Questions

Unit 4: Added Value Unit

All pupils have the option of using their AVU as the basis of the National 5 assignment and being presented for the National 5 qualification in RMPS.  In 2019 one pupil gained an eighth National 5 qualification by using her core RMPS teaching as the basis for gaining a National 5 pass (gaining an A pass).
